Nothing else but the infamous Vegemite is an Australian icon. Contrary to belief, however, not all Australians eat it like it’s chocolate. According to my Aussie friends, the proper way to eat it if you want to try this acquired taste, is to spread it really thin over a buttered piece of toast. That’s if its appearance and smell don’t deter you first.
Trying Vegemite wasn’t as horrible as I thought it was going to be, but it probably would’ve helped had I not tried it at 7 o’clock in the morning too. There’s only one way I can think of to describe the taste of Vegemite and that’s that it’s like super concentrated soy sauce. Though I’ve also heard it described as taking all the salt in the ocean and putting it into a jar. Either way, that gives anyone an idea as to just how salty Vegemite is.
