There’s nothing like saying “Welcome to Australia!” than eating a kangaroo steak on your first day. I’m not one to usually try new foods, but I knew I had to try some on my quest to have a fulfilling Aussie experience. I mean how bad could it be, right? I’ve had buffalo, elk, deer and pheasant before. Therefore, it’s not exactly the weirdest meat I’ve ever tried, although undoubtedly it’s one of the most exotic.
When I took my first bite, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was very tender, although a bit chewy. It gave my jaw quite the workout. Anyways, I found the flavor to be uncharacteristically sweet for a meat and quite tasty besides the strange aftertaste. It’s not that it’s bad, but that it has a much gamier flavor than I’m used to. Dipped in a bit of barbecue sauce solved that problem and I soon polished off the rest. If I were ever posed with the possibility of trying kangaroo again, I would definitely have another go at it.
